Trixies Mama asked:
I was just curious, I got a Rottweiler in January and I’ve heard a lot of people say they are very prone to cancer. Since my last dog was put down because of liver cancer, I was quite sad to hear this. I don’t know what breed he was, but what breeds are most prone to cancer?
My Rottweiler currently is nine years old and altered, she is in good health so far, thank the heavens!

My friend had three Pyrennean Mountain Dogs (the huge white fluffy ones), unrelated, and they all died of bone cancer one after the other. She was heartbroken but now she has a Newfoundland that touch wood is healthy. She likes huge dogs! I don’t have any info on other breeds. Good luck with your rotti, they are such beautiful loyal dogs and have a bad reputation only because of bad owners.

any purebred dog is prone to diseases because of overbreeding; as far as cancer, different breeds seem to be predisposed to certain types of cancers. For instance, goldens frequently get cancer of the spleen, boxers heart, goldens & labs skin (esp on noses) & bones in legs, really large breed dogs also in their leg bones, smaller breeds sometimes have eyelid type tumors etc etc. It’s like people, some get it some don’t, there is some genetics to it too. I worked in a vet hospital that had an oncoligist & we saw every breed, purebred & mixed so it can happen to any breed..

I know of Rotties, Goldens, Boxers, Danes and Irish Wolfhounds.GSDs are prone to Hemangiosarcoma too. Cancer is up in the senior dog pop too. My Rott died of Lymphosarcoma at 11 and 2 yrs later 1 of my rescued MinPins did too. The MinPin was around 11 and his original owners had overfed him until he was twice his normal weight and he was like that for 7 yrs. We knew he would probably die younger than normal since his organs took so much punishment.

All dogs are cancer prone. We’re seeing more cancer in dogs as well as humans. I think it’s due to poor quality food in their diets. Buy your food at a reputable pet or feed store not at the grocery store. Buy a brand that uses human quality ingredients. You will be happy you did, as you will have far fewer health related issues to deal with over the life of your pet. There are also lots of chemicals in our environment that affect not only dogs, but humans also. Rottweilers are large dogs and don’t tend to live as long as smaller dogs. The larger breeds mature faster and live shorter lives. Since they age so fast, they are prone to getting more advanced diseases such as cancers. I would purchase a good pet health insurance and keep your dog covered. They have plans that cover anywhere from 50% to 100% of the vet bill. The higher the coverage, the higher the premium. It’s worth it for this breed of dog. Have your Rottie altered. It’s healthier for them.

Studies have shown that the English Setter, Chihuahua, Miniature Poodle, and Afghan Hound have a predilection for invasive mammary gland cancers; Boxers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Chinese Shar-Pei, and Boston Terriers have a predisposition to mast cell (deep skin cell) cancers; and Bernese Mountain Dogs are prone to malignant histiocytosis, a cancer of the white blood cells. Unspayed female dogs (and those spayed late in life) are more susceptible to mammary gland cancers, and unneutered male dogs (especially those with a retained testicle) are at risk for testicular cancer. Malignancies are generally diseases of older dogs, so owners should be diligent in their observation and handling of senior pets.
Cancer is becoming a very common condition in the Rottweiler breed, with bone cancer being the most frequent type. Any suspicious lumps, moles, sores or unexplained lameness should be investigated by your veterinarian.

I am sorry for your loss, but it is known that all breeds are susceptible to Cancer, as are we all.
You see, cancer is an abnormal growth of cells, and we all carry to potential to trigger abnormal cell growth. With dog breeds, the very thing that makes a dog beautiful is often what weakens it. That is why it is SO very important to monitor dog breeding. It is also important to buy a dog from a knowledgeable breeder, who loves his dogs and can tell you about each one of them.
I had a cocker once that I bought from a reputable kennel. When I got to the house, the pups were everywhere and mixed in with the adult dogs, whcih was fine I guess, but the owners could not tell me whic two were the parents of my pup. I bought the dog anyway, and later in his life he developed breast tumors and a VERY NASTY attitude. We had to have him put down, and I cried for a week.
I have switched to Boerboels, and I chose this breed because it is a strong line of dogs. I have some puppies on the ground right now if you would like to see them. They are very cute. it is our 3rd litter, and we are proud. Give us a look see and tell me what you think.
Sincerely
Sharon M Johnson

It doesnt matter the breed of the dog to much, any breed of dog can get cancer. I three different breeds over the years and they all had to be put down due to cancer.
Its just how you look after the dog and get your dog to have its regular check ups, like we do at the doctor. It can happen to any breed, not just a particular type.
