Stomach cancer is diagnosed using an EGD (esophagastroduodenoscopy).
This test basically consist of going to the hospital and being put into a twilight sleep while the gastroenterologist runs a scope thru your mouth into your stomach. The scope, usually called an olymposcope has special tools on the end of it so the doctor can pinch biopsy tissue out of the stomach if he sees anything looking suspicous. They examine the stomach and see if there are any ulcers or suspicious looking lesions which need to be biopsied.
It takes about less than 10 minutes to run the scope into the stomach and then they remove it and you wake back up.
The biopsy samples are sent to pathology where they are examined under a microscope to determine if they are malignant or benign and give the gastroenterologist a diagnosis.
The gastroenterologist examines so many people every day thru EGD examination, they can sometimes tell if something is suspicious for malignancy just by looking at it.
