My 6 year old cousin with cancer, was it a mistake?
Okay, so my six year old cousin was just diagnosed with bone cancer. I am very very very VERY close to her. we’re both like sisters. When i found out she had bone cancer, i was terrified. I had so many questions that i just wanted to be answers. i’m sticking with her in the hospital everyday for six hours. About three weeks ago, she had to start chemo, but was too scared. I assured her it would be okay, but she didn’t know what to believe. She had to shave her head, but that made her more terrified. So i asked my aunt [her mom] what i should do. she told me there is nothing i can do. So the next day, i shaved my head for my cousin so she will feel better. and she did, and she is going through chemo and i’m sticking by her side 6 hours a day everyday until school starts. what i’m questioning is, was shaving my head a mistake?

Lung Cancer
I lost my mom to cancer in May of 2005. I think what you did was sweet and self-less. God bless.

Why did they shave her head? Usually it takes awhile before the chemotherapy starts to make the hair fall out. It really wasn’t necessary to shave her hair so soon.
As for you shaving your head too, that was thoughtful of you and since she seemed to enjoy it . . . than yes it was the right thing to do.
Don’t worry about your hair, it will all grow back eventually. In fact your hair grows a little each month, so you should feel some ’stubble’ really soon. Once your cousin is done with chemotherapy her hair will grow back too.

The bottom line is that if your shaving your head gave courage and comfort to your cousin then you absolutely did the right thing.
You need to realize that being that close each and every day to someone who is fighting cancer can be very stressful on you. Make sure you talk regularly with an adult that you love and trust about what is happening with you and what is going on with your cousin. Over time things could be very rough for both of you. All the best to you both.

No, it was not a mistake. It was a compassionate gesture. Adults should take lessons from you. Hang in there.
